With so many important aspects, it’s important that you understand what parallel structure and why’s important to use correctly.

Here are some examples below:

Your business and its growth have helped this town’s economy boost this year.

Rebecca cooked turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and green beans for Thanksgiving this year.

Scott told me that he prefers writing rather than reading.

To enjoy wine is to savor the flavor slowly.

Penelope not only hates peas but she also hates lima beans, too.

After viewing these examples, you probably noticed that you either use or see parallel structure almost in everyday language. After working through these examples and exercises, you’ll become a master of parallel structure yourself. But before we move onto the exercises, there are a few rules to understand. So let’s dive in.

Rule #1: Parallel Structure with Coordinating Conjunctions

In regards to parallel structure, this rule is the most commonly used. Coordinating conjunctions connect a subject with its pronoun. Sometimes, young writers misuse coordinating conjunctions when connecting the subject to its pronoun. Here are some examples below:

Incorrect: A school and what its faculty and staff have contribute to the school district’s overall great performance.

Correct: A school and its faculty and staff contribute to the school district’s overall great performance.

Here are some other examples below:

What will Connie and her family do about moving to another city in just six months?

The dog and her puppy were lying in the sun this afternoon.

Aaron and the other boys were missing from math class.

As you can see, the subject and pronoun must use parallel structure in order to make sense and be correct. If you practice at using parallel structure with coordinating conjunctions in this section, then you’ll be able to master it quickly. Let’s practice with a few exercises.

Below are exercises that ask you to create sentences using parallel structure with coordinating conjunctions. Random words are provided for you, so feel free to get creative with your sentences. Examples are provided in the back of the book.
